Prayer and Work

Sunday in Ordinary Time

At last, I made it to the beach this afternoon! Touhy Beach is about a 45 minute walk from the monastery and having fallen out of the habit of walking over there, I finally did so today with an energetic friend who was visiting us. The flag reminds me that we are heading into the 4th of July Holiday and high midsummer. I rejoice for all that this means: feast days, community days, vacation days, and the beauty of summer all around, the pursuit of happiness, indeed. Because I have been away from the beach for a while, I had not seen the many areas they are setting aside and planting with native dune plants, to protect against erosion and to provide nesting space for migrating birds. It is a large beach and park with plenty of room for all God’s creatures – swimmers, sunbathers, picnickers, athletes, birds large and small, and at the water’s edge, the dad and his little daughter we saw creating an impressive sand sculpture of a tortoise with the word Mexico spelled out at its head.

The flag at Heartland Cafe dances to the heartbeat of the summer wind.
