Disclaimer – this is the before photo of my new garden, taken last Friday evening, when I met my friend Marge out at the community gardens, where she was graciously giving me an unoccupied corner of her garden to plant this year. It has felt wonderful, to get out and dig, hoe, weed, plant, and water, incredibly without a single sore muscle, after an absence of a decade. Just turning the soil, I felt once again that sense of connection with the earth, with green life, with gardening peoples, and with the Source of it all. Now, after the Memorial Day weekend, the patch has three tomato plants, two basil, two chiles poblanos anchos, one jalapeno, one chile serrano, one cilantro, one crook-neck yellow squash, and one pumpkin that promises “We B Small”. We hope so. Also, one hungry baby rabbit that hides out in that plant by the fence. Looking forward to salsa fresca.
